Known as Sri Lanka's administrative and religious capital, Kandy is nestled amidst breathtaking mountain ranges. This ancient city, once the capital of Sri Lanka, holds great historical significance. It is home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, one of the most revered Buddhist sites in the world. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988, Kandy has a rich history of Buddhist kings who valiantly defended the island against colonial powers such as the Portuguese, Dutch, and British.
- Next, continue your journey to Nuwara Eliya, making a stop at the enchanting Ramboda Falls en route. Standing at an impressive height of 109 meters (358 feet), Ramboda Falls is the 11th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka and forms a captivating sight along the A5 highway. It is created by the convergence of Panna Oya, a tributary of Kothmale Oya. Additionally, visit the esteemed Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple in Ramboda, a significant temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman. This temple holds a special place along the Ramayana Trail and was constructed in 1999 as a tribute to Hanuman's search for Sita Devi. Nearby, you can explore the village of "Ravana Goda," which carries intriguing connections to the Ramayana epic.
- Continue your exploration with a visit to a Tea Factory and Tea Plantation in Nuwara Eliya. This region is renowned for its picturesque tea estates, blanketed in vibrant greenery. Take the opportunity to learn about tea production and witness the fascinating process firsthand. Nuwara Eliya, often referred to as Sri Lanka's Little England, offers more than just tea plantations. - Overnight at Hotel 3 Star in Nuwara Eliya on Bed & Breakfast Basis.
- After breakfast at the hotel, begin your day with a visit to the Sri Seetha Amman temple, a significant site from the Ramayana epic. According to the legend, this temple is where Sita, the wife of King Rama, was held captive by the evil king Ravana. Explore the nearby brook, believed to be where Sita washed, and the rock where she prayed. The rock face across the creek bears circular depressions said to be footprints of Ravana's elephant. Legend has it that Sita cursed a point in the stream, giving its water a terrible taste.
- Next, visit the Gayathri Peedam, also known as the Gayathri Cathedral. It is the first temple dedicated to Goddess Gayathri and holds great spiritual significance. According to the myth, when Prince Meganath (Indrajit), the son of King Ravana, performed sacred rituals here, the Tri Moortis (Siva, Brahma, and Vishnu) appeared. The Gayathri Peedam is a significant stop on Sri Lanka's Ramayana Trail.
- Before departing for Colombo, visit Ashoka Vatika, the garden in Lanka mentioned in the Ramayana epic. It was here that Ravana held Sita captive after her kidnapping. Sita chose to stay under the shimshapa tree in Ashoka Vatika instead of residing in Ravana's castle.
- En route to Colombo, marvel at the beauty of St. Clair's and Devon Falls. St. Clair's Falls, also known as the "Little Niagara of Sri Lanka," is one of the country's largest waterfalls. Located along the Kotmale Oya, it is near Devon Falls, named after an English coffee grower. Devon Falls is 97 meters (318 feet) tall, ranking as the 19th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka.
